The Spiderwick Chronicles

The Spiderwick Chronicles is a 2008 fantasy film adaptation of Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi's bestselling series of the same name. Set in the Spiderwick Estate in New England, it follows the adventures of Jared Grace and his family as they discover a field guide to faeries and battle goblins and other magical creatures. It was directed by Mark Waters and stars Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, Martin Short, Nick Nolte, and Seth Rogen. Produced by Nickelodeon Movies and distributed by Paramount Pictures, it was released on February 14, 2008. The film will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 24 June 2008 in the United States.

Alexander

Alexander is a 2004 epic film, based on the life of Alexander the Great. The film was directed by Oliver Stone, who contended that the theatrical release was based on historical events.
The film was based mostly on the book Alexander the Great, which was written by historian Robin Lane Fox in the 1970s. He gave up his screen credit in return for being allowed to take part in the epic cavalry charge during the film's recreation of the Battle of Gaugamela.
The film proved controversial. It was critically derided upon its release and failed at the American box office, grossing only US$34 million domestically, while costing $155 million to produce. It did better internationally, however, grossing a total of $133 million in overseas revenues.

13th Warrior

The 13th Warrior is a 1999 action film based on Michael Crichton's novel Eaters of the Dead, directed by John McTiernan and an uncredited Crichton, and starring Antonio Banderas as Ahmad ibn Fadlan and Vladimir Kulich as Buliwyf (Beowulf). The 13th Warrior was a disappointment at the box office, earning only US$61,698,899 worldwide.
The novel upon which the film is based and loosely inspired by Richard Frye's translation of ibn Fadlan's non-fictional account of his travels up the river Volga in the tenth century. The plot is largely a modernized retelling of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, with elements added from The Book of One Thousand and One Nights.

King Arthur

King Arthur is a 2004 film directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by David Franzoni. It stars Clive Owen as the title character.
The makers of the film claim to present a historically accurate version of the Arthurian legends, supposedly inspired by new archaeological findings. The accuracy of these claims is subject to debate, but the film is unusual in representing Arthur as a Roman soldier rather than a medieval knight.

King Solomon's Mines (1985 film)

King Solomon's Mines was a 1985 film loosely based on the novel King Solomon's Mines (1885) by H. Rider Haggard. It starred Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone, Herbert Lom and John Rhys-Davies. It was adapted by Gene Quintano and James R. Silke and directed by J. Lee Thompson. This version of the story was a light, comedic take, deliberately referencing and parodying Indiana Jones.
It was followed by what critics considered "a badly made sequel" for "bad-film enthusiasts": Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1987).

The New World

The New World is a 2005 Academy Award-nominated drama / romance film directed by Terrence Malick. It is a historical adventure set during the founding of the Jamestown, Virginia settlement and inspired by the historical figures Captain John Smith and Pocahontas.
The New World is Malick's fourth feature film, and was written by him. The cast includes Colin Farrell, Q'Orianka Kilcher, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale, August Schellenberg, Wes Studi, David Thewlis and Yorick van Wageningen. The production team includes director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki, production designer Jack Fisk, costume designer Jacqueline West and film editor Richard Chew. The film had an estimated budget of $30 million and was produced by Sarah Green.

Jewel of the Nile

The Jewel of the Nile is a sequel to the 1984 romantic adventure Romancing the Stone featuring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito, the stars of the first film. Released in 1985, it sends their characters off on a new adventure in a fictional Middle Eastern desert, in an effort to find the precious "Jewel of the Nile."

Like the first film, the opening scene takes place in one of Joan's novels. But this time, instead of Joan's wild-west supercouple, Jesse and Angelina, Joan and Jack are the featured heroes. As the movie starts Jack and Joan are on an old sailing ship.

Tristan & Isolde is a 2006 German/British/American film based on the medieval romantic legend of Tristan and Iseult. It was produced by Ridley Scott (who had been working on an adaptation since the mid-seventies) and Tony Scott, directed by Kevin Reynolds and stars James Franco and Sophia Myles.
This film is a non-operatic rendition of the plot of Richard Wagner's, Tristan und Isolde. The original music score was composed by Anne Dudley.

The Day After Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow is a 2004 apocalyptic science-fiction film that depicts the catastrophic effects of global warming. Worldwide, it is the 45th top grossing film of all time, with total revenue of US $542,771,772. It is the second highest grossing movie not to be #1 in the US box office (behind My Big Fat Greek Wedding). It currently holds the record for biggest opening weekend gross for any movie not opening at #1 with $68.7 million. The movie was filmed mostly in Montreal, and, as of 2008, is the highest grossing Hollywood film in history to be filmed in Canada.
The Day After Tomorrow premiered in Mexico City on May 17, 2004 and was released worldwide from May 26 to May 28 except in South Korea and Japan where it was released June 4 and June 5, respectively. The film was originally planned for release in summer 2003.

10,000 BC is a 2008 American film set in the prehistoric era directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Camilla Belle and Steven Strait. The World Premiere of the movie was on February 26, 2008 at the CineStar theater in Berlin's Potsdamer Platz. The cinema release was on March 6, 2008.

The film follows D'Leh (Steven Strait), a young mammoth hunter from the Yagahl tribe during the middle stone age (Mesolithic period). It is shown first that, when D'Leh was young, two events happened. First, the mysterious arrival of Evolet (Camilla Belle), a young girl with bright blue eyes who prompts a prophecy from the wise old woman of the tribe, Old Mother (Mona Hammond). Second, the departure of D'Leh's father who leaves to look for new ways to bring sustenance to the tribe. D'Leh falls in love with Evolet and promises that she will always be in his heart.

Around the World in 80 Days is a 2004 comedy/adventure film based on Jules Verne's novel, Around the World in 80 Days. It stars Jackie Chan, Steve Coogan and Cecile de France.
The film' is set in 19th century England and centers on Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan), here reimagined as an eccentric inventor, and his efforts to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. During the trip he is accompanied by his Chinese valet Passepartout (Jackie Chan). For comedic reasons, the film intentionally deviated wildly from the novel and included a number of anachronistic elements.
Despite boasting of several big stars and containing many celebrity cameos, the film was a box office bomb and ended up generating a huge loss for the studio.

Jurassic Park III is a 2001 film that is the third film of the Jurassic Park film series. Jurassic Park III is the sequel to The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and is the first in the series that is neither based on a book by Michael Crichton nor directed by Steven Spielberg. It takes place on Isla Sorna, the island from the second film, after a couple hires Dr. Grant to help them find their son.
After the success of the first Jurassic Park, Joe Johnston asked Steven Spielberg if he could direct the film adaptation of The Lost World, the sequel to Jurassic Park. While Spielberg wanted to do the project, he promised to give the helm of the second sequel to Johnston. Three years after the release of The Lost World, production of a third film began in late August of 2000.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (commonly referred to as The Lost World) is a 1997 American science fiction film and the second Jurassic Park film as part of the Jurassic Park franchise. The film succeeds Jurassic Park directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film centers on the island of Isla Sorna, an auxiliary site for the main Jurassic Park island, where dinosaurs have taken over and live in the wild. Ian Malcolm leads a team to document the dinosaurs in their native habitat, while an InGen team attempts to capture them for a second Jurassic Park in San Diego.
After the release of the original Jurassic Park book and the success of the first film, Crichton was pressured not only by fans, but Spielberg himself, for a sequel novel. After the book was published in 1995, production began on a film sequel.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is a 1993 science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film centers on the island of Isla Nublar, where scientists have created an amusement park of cloned dinosaurs. John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) invites a group of scientists, played by Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, to visit the park. Sabotage sets the dinosaurs on the loose, and technicians and visitors attempt to escape the island.
Development of the film began before the novel was even published, and Crichton was hired to contribute to a script that cut much of its story. Spielberg hired Stan Winston Studios's puppets and worked with Industrial Light and Magic to develop cutting-edge computer-generated imagery to portray the dinosaurs. Jurassic Park received positive reviews from critics, who praised the special effects, but found the film mediocre in other aspects. During its release, the film grossed more than $914 million, becoming the most successful film yet released, and it is currently the tenth-highest grossing feature film, significantly inspiring a new breed of films that primarily used CGI for special effects. Jurassic Park was the first film in the Jurassic Park franchise, followed by The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997 and by Jurassic Park III in 2001, with Jurassic Park IV in development.

Back to the Future III

Back to the Future Part III is the third and final installment of the Back to the Future trilogy. The film is a science fiction western, using the time travel premise of the series to take Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) back to the Old West of 1885.

The film opens by replaying the conclusion of Back to the Future Part II. Marty is stranded in 1955, but has received a seventy-year-old letter from Doc Brown. In the letter, Doc explains that he is trapped in 1885 as the technology required to repair the De Lorean was invented in 1947. The letter tells Marty where the De Lorean is, but gives him explicit instructions to not attempt a rescue. Instead, he is told to immediately return to 1985 and destroy the time machine in order to prevent further disruption of the space-time continuum.

Back to the Future II

Back to the Future Part II is a 1989 film and the first sequel to the 1985 film Back to the Future. Like the previous film, it was directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. Part II and the third installment of the trilogy, Back to the Future Part III, were filmed back-to-back and released six months apart. Although released in 1989 and 1990, both films continued to portray 1985 as the present.
Part II follows the continued adventures of Marty McFly and "Doc" Emmett Brown as they use their time-traveling De Lorean, which is now capable of flight, to travel to a retro-futuristic version of 2015, an alternate 1985 and the principal setting of the first film in 1955. The film ends with a cliffhanger that is resolved in Part III.

Back to the Future

Back to the Future is a 1985 science fiction–comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg. Zemeckis wrote the story, along with Bob Gale. It stars Michael J. Fox as teenager Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as mad scientist Dr. Emmett L. Brown.
The film's basic storyline involves the premise of time travel being used to breach the generation gap. In a De Lorean time machine invented by Dr. Brown, Marty accidentally travels back to the year 1955 when his parents were teenagers. Having interfered with their first meeting, Marty must ensure that his young parents fall in love so that he will be born. Furthermore, the Dr. Brown of 1955 must find a way to return Marty to 1985 without the plutonium necessary to fuel the journey.
The film opened on July 3, 1985, and grossed U.S. $210 million at the U.S. box office, making it the highest grossing film of 1985. The film was followed by two sequels, Back to the Future Part II in 1989 and Back to the Future Part III in 1990, forming a trilogy. On December 17, 2002, Universal Studios Home Entertainment released the film on DVD and VHS as part of Back to the Future: The Complete Trilogy

Romancing the Stone

Romancing the Stone is an American 1984 action-adventure film. It also has many elements that might categorize it as a romantic comedy. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, it stars Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito.
The movie was a respectable hit and earned over USD$114 million worldwide in box-office receipts and $36 million in video rentals. This film also helped launch Turner to stardom, reintroduced Douglas to the public as a capable leading man, and gave Zemeckis his first box office success.

The plot of the movie revolves around romance writer Joan Wilder, played by Kathleen Turner, who travels to Colombia to find her kidnapped sister. In time she falls in love with a soldier of fortune and the two become romantically involved as they search for a precious stone which the kidnappers want.

Dances with Wolves

Dances with Wolves is an Academy award winning 1990 epic film which tells the story of a United States cavalry officer from the Civil War who travels alone into the frontier near a Sioux tribe. Developed by director/star Kevin Costner over 5 years, the film (released 21 November 1990) has high production values and won 7 Academy Awards (1990) and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama. Much of the dialogue is in the Lakota language with English subtitles, unusual for a film at the time of its release.
In 2007, Dances with Wolves was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
